In Celebration of My Menstruation

I-

Ode

Red

is beautiful

a gumamela in

full bloom

an apple, its

ripest cheek

turned

Red is

strong

crashing waves

of pain,

of passion,

breaking

rising up again

Red is

enduring

since days of

old, from the

Mother,

come to bless

her daughters

Red is

powerful

a forceful force,

a fearless

reckoning,

creator of

Man

Red is Woman.

II-

Bloom

this red pollen

my own, every

woman’s shared

secret blossom, plucked

by our own hand

given,

not lost

III

Girl

red

washed over

flowed through

parted thighs

spring

a white dress

eyes wide

exclaimed surprise

her mother

grasped the hem

grasped her face

tears in her eyes

“You’re a Woman now.”

IV

Riddle

Q:

What is red

and comes when

the full moon rises?

It sanctifies,

purifies,

washes, cleanses.

It’s so strong

it can make

a woman a goddess.

A:

It’s my menses!
